Is it hard to learn how to sail a sailboat?

Is boating something you could learn on your own with lots of practice? Or do you need someone who knows what they're doing to be with you for a while? And what is a good price for a pretty good sailboat? And what are some things people do while on their boats..ha. Thank you!
