Can you pet a wild leopard shark or will it attack you?

My parents own a sailboat and I fish down at the dock. Mostly every time I see this leopard shark and she/ he scares me to death but i was wondering if she/he is dangerous.How can you tell if a leopard shark is a female or a male without touching it.
